Mapping Solutions for Progressive Resource Management

Soils

Soils dictate what vegetation will grow in different areas as well as the potential productivity of the land. With accurate soils information, natural resource managers are better equipped to make wise land management decisions.

The US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has been instrumental in mapping and disseminating soils information at a variety of scales. This information is available in either printed form in the county soil surveys or in digital form in their on-line databases. Landitude, Inc. can either digitize the printed soils surveys or find the soils information you need in the NRCS on-line databases. The soils information we assemble / digitize can be easily incorporated into the new or existing GIS databases of your organization. These data can also be delivered with free viewing software that will allow you to get the most out of the data or printed in a book detailing just the areas you are most interested in.

The highly detailed descriptive information contained in the NRCS on-line databases and soil surveys, when used within a GIS, can facilitate a wide range of analysis.

  • Range Site Production
  • Potential Natural Plant Communities
  • Suitability for Wildlife Habitat
  • Suitability for Construction
  • Erosion Potential
  • Potential for Flooding
  • Timing of Flooding
  • Etc.

Unfortunately, many counties across the US do not have NRCS soil surveys in either printed or digital format. Landitude, Inc. can produce detailed soils maps in both printed and digital format that can be easily incorporated into your new or existing GIS databases or printed in your very own personal soil survey. We produce these maps by analyzing aerial photography, topography and collecting numerous soil samples for analysis. Once we have analyzed all the data we develop a computer model to predict the soils composition across the entire project area using sophisticated interpolation methods.
