These days one of the primary concerns of state and local governments is to track and account for their capitol assets and funds in accordance with the 1999 GASB statement 34 guidelines. Cities across North America are utilizing the power of GIS to help in achieving these tasks. According to GASB 34 all government infrastructure including roads, water and sewer systems, street signs, bridges etc… must be appraised and put into inventory and then submitted into their financial statements. By using a GIS, state and local governments gain the ability to keep an up to date inventory of all infrastructure assets in accordance with GASB 34.
