Electric utilities have facilities and infrastructure that span over hundreds or thousands of square miles. Thus the only practical method of tracking and monitoring such facilities is through the use of mapping and GIS database integration. Integration of existing maps and new field reconnaissance data within a GIS database makes it possible to effectively monitor areas of concern as well as providing a graphical representation of assets.
